MONDAY, July 5, 2021 – Birkdale Golf Club has been CLOSED since Monday, June 14, 2021 for planned renovations to the golf course. We anticipate completion of all projects and re-opening of the golf course in late Summer 2021. Sprigging of the new greens has been completed and continued maintenance on the golf course will be ongoing during the growing phase. During all renovations the clubhouse, Arnie’s Tavern and practice facility will be OPEN as normal.
Our renovation goal is to provide an exceptional experience for years to come. Birkdale Golf Club was built to be an elite semi-private facility in the Charlotte area. There will be interruptions to our club this summer as we work diligently to complete the planned improvements. Despite the temporary closure, we will benefit from the new greens and improved turf conditions throughout the golf course. We look forward to bringing Birkdale back to a high standard.

Sprigging of the new greens begins the week of June 28, 2021. Sprigging involves planting vegetative pieces into the soil. These vegetative pieces will root and grow together to establish a completed surface. Bermudagrass Sprigs should be planted before July in the early growing season. Depending on soil moisture, temperature and management, establishment generally takes 45 to 90 days. Irrigation should be applied to sprigs immediately after planting. Mowing should begin as soon as the sprigs stabilize the soil surface.
Many courses choose MiniVerde for its fast putting surface as it creates a smooth, high-quality surface for excellent ball roll. Ultradwarf Bermudagrass is a high shoot density Bermudagrass for production of high quality golf greens. MiniVerde Bermudagrass tolerates continuous close mowing, has a dark green color and excellent low temperature color retention. Putting surface development will depend on rate of planting and fertilization during the first weeks after planting.
When resurfacing existing greens, a well-prepared planting bed should be achieved. Complete kill of existing grass surfaces should be accomplished by fumigation or by repeat applications of non-selective herbicides. Soil fumigants, such as methyl bromide, play a pivotal role in the renovation process. The United States Golf Association (USGA) recommends soil sterilization during the renovation and building process in order to reduce competition from weed seed, soil borne insects, nematodes, as well as soil borne diseases. We have relied on the fumigant methyl bromide as an affordable and effective soil sterilant.
Topdressing, using material consistent in physical characteristics to the existing root-zone, should be applied to newly planted greens to help produce a smooth putting surface. Light, weekly topdressing applications will begin 2 to 3 weeks after planting depending on rate of surface development.

Romspen Club Holdings (Owner) has been studying potential improvements for Birkdale Golf Club. The improvements have been related to a master planned development project located on the practice facility property. The most impactful aspect of the improvement plan for the golf course was to convert the old Bentgrass greens surfaces into new Bermudagrass surfaces. Despite delays of the development project, Birkdale Golf Club is excited to inform the Charlotte golfing community that the owners have decided to move forward with the greens renovation project this summer.
Major projects for the golf course include conversion of all greens to MiniVerde Ultradwarf Bermudagrass, drainage improvements, cart path repair, tree work, bunker repair and improvement of the turf quality throughout the golf course.
